John was born in 1829 in Atherton.1  John's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Buckley.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Jane (Jenny) Sale. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Martha, Edward, James, Richard, Ann and Elizabeth.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
