Edward was born in March 1855 in Little Hulton.1  Edward's father was John Mather and his mother was Betty Edge.  His paternal grandparents were Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and Catherine Gregory. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Robert, William, Catherine, Mary and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the six children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Robert, John and Louisa.
