Catherine was born in March 1853 in Over Hulton and her baptism took place on April 10th, 1853 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Catherine's father was John Mather and her mother was Betty Edge.  Her paternal grandparents were Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and Catherine Gregory. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Edward, Robert, William, Mary and Elizabeth.  She was the oldest of the six children. She had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Robert, John and Louisa.
