Joseph was born in September 1880 in Westhoughton.1  Joseph's father was Joseph Hilton and his mother was Alice Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Joseph Mather and Jane (Ann) Smith. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Jeffrey, Reuben, Joseph, Herbert, Annie and Jane.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 1 in June 1882 in Westhoughton.2
