William's father was James Mather and his mother was Esther Pasquill (Pasquell). His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Elizabeth Buckley. He had four brothers and three sisters, named James, Richard, John, Samuel, Elizabeth, Martha and Mary. He was the second oldest of the eight children.
