John was born in 1862 in Atherton.1  John's father was James Mather and his mother was Esther Pasquill (Pasquell).  His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Elizabeth Buckley. He had four brothers and three sisters, named James, William, Richard, Samuel, Elizabeth, Martha and Mary.  He was the fourth youngest of the eight children.

‌John and Ellen were married in a religious ceremony on May 14th, 1892 at St. John the Baptist (Atherton).2   The family line is yet to be completed.
