Ruth was born in 1854 in Westhoughton.1 Ruth's father was Luke Southern and her mother was Betty Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Charles Pennington and Martha Mather. She had two brothers and two sisters, named James, George, Ellen and Mary. She was the second oldest of the five children.-
