Ellen was born in 1854 in Westhoughton.1   Ellen's father was Luke Southern and her mother was Betty Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were Charles Pennington and Martha Mather. She had two brothers and two sisters, named James, George, Ruth and Mary.  She was the oldest of the five children.
