Catharine was born in 1773 in Westhoughton and her baptism took place on November 21st, 1773 at St. Bartholomew (Westhoughton).1  Catharine's father was Ralph Mather and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Glover. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Ralph, John, Betty, Ann, Ellin, Hannah, Ellin and Mary.  She was the second oldest of the nine children.
