Ellin was born in February 1786 in Westhoughton and her baptism took place on February 28th, 1786 at St. Bartholomew (Westhoughton).1  Ellin's father was Ralph Mather and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Glover. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Ralph, John, Betty, Catharine, Ann, Ellin, Hannah and Mary.  She was the second youngest of the nine children.
