Betty was born in March 1770 in Wigan and her baptism took place on March 25th, 1770 at All Saints (Wigan).1  Betty's father was Ralph Mather and her mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Glover. She had two brothers and six sisters, named Ralph, John, Catharine, Ann, Ellin, Hannah, Ellin and Mary.  She was the oldest of the nine children.
