John was born in August 1783 in Westhoughton and his baptism took place on August 17th, 1783 at St. Bartholomew (Westhoughton).1  John's father was Ralph Mather and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Glover. He had a brother and seven sisters, named Ralph, Betty, Catharine, Ann, Ellin, Hannah, Ellin and Mary.  He was the third youngest of the nine children.

‌John and Elizabeth were married in a religious ceremony on October 27th, 1807 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Eccles).
