Maria was born on September 1st, 1885 in Tynemouth and her baptism took place on February 5th, 1888 at St. Bartholomew (Westhoughton).1  Maria's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Rachel Teesdale.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Elizabeth Heald. She had a brother and two sisters, named Daniel, Margaret and Mary.  She was the second youngest of the four children.  She died at the age of 69 in April 1955 in Horwich.2
