John was born in 1760 in Pennington and his baptism took place on January 16th, 1760 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  John's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Mary Mather. He had four brothers and two sisters, named William, Thomas, Joseph, Robert, Catherine and Mary.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven known children.
