Samuel was born in July 1870 in Atherton and his baptism took place on August 28th, 1870 at St. John the Baptist (Atherton).1 2  Samuel's father was Edward Mather and his mother was Betty Abbott. He had two brothers and two sisters, named John, James, Martha and Martha.  He was the youngest of the five children.
