Henry's father was William Elliott and his mother was Ellen Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and Catherine Gregory. He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, Frederick, John, Elizabeth, Kate, Alice and Mary.  He was the oldest of the eight children.  He died at the age of 16 in 1859 in Halliwell.²
