Mary's father was William Elliott and her mother was Ellen Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and Catherine Gregory. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Henry, William, Frederick, John, Elizabeth, Kate and Alice. She was the sixth oldest of the eight children.
