Elizabeth's father was William Elliott and her mother was Ellen Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and Catherine Gregory. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Henry, William, Frederick, John, Kate, Alice and Mary. She was the second oldest of the eight children.
