James and Margaret were from Wigan (see 1851 census), they married there in 1828 and the first children were born there.  James (or Jacob) second marriage was Roman Catholic, and shows his father was John.

In 1841, James and Margaret (both 30), were with William (9), James (7), Jane (5), Joseph (2) and John (5 months) at Commission Street, SW Bolton (see map).

In 1851, James and wife Margaret (42 & 40) were in Derby Street, East Bolton with William (19), James (16), Joseph (12), John (10) and Mary (7).

Margaret, wife of James Mather died 4 February 1860, aged 53 years (headstone).  A month later, James married Mary Hornby.  (The only marriage to a Mary 1853-61 is Mary Hornby in 1861).

17 Jan 1861 Jacobum (i.e. James) Mather of Derby Street, son of Joannis (i.e. John) married Mariam (i.e. Mary)  Hornby of Lever Bridge, daughter of Jacobi Hornby at  St Peter & St Paul Roman Catholic Church, Bolton.

In 1861, James and Mary (52, born Wigan & 38) were at 59 Derby Street, Bradford, Bolton with John (20) and Mary (17)
1832 - 1901 William Mather 69 69 In 1841 William was aged 9 with his parents and family at Commission St, W Bolton.

In 1851, James was 19, with parents and family in Derby Street.

28 Apr 1858, Gulielmum (i.e. William) Mather of Cheapside married Annam (i.e. Ann) Burchall of Crook Street, daughter of Thomas Burchall at St Peter & St Paul Roman Catholic Church, Bolton.

In 1861, William (29) was a Book Keeper and Ann (25) a Shop Keeper at Weston Street, E Bolton. They had a daughter Mary (1).

In Jan 1868 Gulielmo and Anna Mather (i.e. William and Ann) from Derby Street were marriage witnesses for William's sister Mariam (i.e. Mary) Mather.

In 1871, William and Ann (39 & 35) were with Mary (11) and James (7) at 88 Derby Street.  Thomas B was missing.

In 1891, William was a milliner, draper and Pawnbroker

14 Nov 1860, Jacobum (i.e. James) Mather of Derby Street married Elizabeth Woods of Cross St at St Peter & St Paul Roman Catholic Church, Bolton.  Josepho Mather and Maria (i.e. Joseph and Mary) Mather of Cross Street were witness.

This family moved around Lancashire.  Bolton births show only five births.  However, the 1881 census shows that James, a House Painter from Wigan, and Elicabeth (46 & 40) had 9 children with births at Warrington, Manchester and Hindley as well as Bolton.

In 1891, James and Elizabeth (57 & 50) were at Warrington with 6 of their children.

Headstone: James Mather died Sep 8 1895, aged 61 years. Also of Elizebeth his wife who died Dec 17th 1897, aged 57 years.
1836 - 1845 Jane Mather 9 9 Aged 5 in 1841 at Commission Street, (SW Bolton).  Commission Street runs parallel with Blackburn Street. 1839 - 1866 Joseph Mather 27 27 Joseph did not marry.  There are no Roman Catholic marriages for him. 1840 - 1897 John Mather 56 56 In 1861, John and Mary (20 & 17) were with their father and step-mother James and Mary Mather (52 & 38) at 59 Derby Street, Bolton.

20 Nov 1867, Joannem (i.e. John) Mather, son of Jacobi (i.e. James) Mather of Derby Street married Catharinam daughter of Thomas Smith.  Witness were Jeremiah Smith from Tyldeley and Maria Mather from Derby Street.

23 Feb 1875 John Mather of 59 Derby Street was registered as the copyright owner of a photograph of the Very Reverend Canon Carter (Ref. COPY 1/28/415 at National Archives, Kew).

In 1881, John and Catherine (40 & 36) were living at 93 Deansgate.

3 Sep 1897, John Mather of 64 Bridge Street, Bolton a printer, bookbinder and stationer died. Probate to Cstherine Mather, Widow.

23 Jan 1868 Thomas Hickson of New Bury son of James married Mariam (i.e. Mary) Mather of Derby Street, daughter of James Mather at St Peter & St Paul Roman Catholic Church, Bolton.  Witnesses were William and Ann Mather from Derby Street (Mary's brother and sister-in-law)
1807 - 1860 Margaret Wood 53 53 James and Margaret Wood were married in 1828.

In 1841, James and Margaret (both 30), were with William (9), James (7), Jane (5), Joseph (2) and John (5 months) at Commission Street, SW Bolton (see map).

Margaret, wife of James Mather died 4th Feb 1860.  James died 27 Oct 1865.  They are buried under the same headstone.

1836 - 1903 Ann Burchall 67 67 In 1901, Ann Mather (65, born Billinge) was head of house with her son-in-law and daughter Isaac and Mary Smith (59 & 41), son William W (29) and a house servant Mary J Smith (possiby Isaac's sister). 1859 Mary Mather There are two Catholic Mary Mathers, daughters of William Mather of Bolton, one born 1856 daughter of Jane and the other (this Mary) born 1859, daughter of Ann. Both had brothers James.

26 Jul 1892, Mary Mather, daughter of William married Isaac Smith of Liverpool, son of George Smith at Bolton, St. Peter & St. Paul RC Church, Bolton.  Witnesses were Jacobo (i.e James) Mather of Bolton and Maria Frances Smith of Liverpool.

In 1841, Jane Mather, 74, Widow was living at Gas Street, West Bolton.  With her was her (assumed) grandson Robert Mather (16), a cotton carder.

Jane's death was registered in Western Bolton in 1877. She was buried 21 July at St. Mary's, Deane.
1825 - 1854 Robert Mather 29 29 In 1841, Robert Mather (16), was living at Gas Street with Jane Mather (74), his aunt or grandmother.

15 Sep 1844 Robert Mather married Agnes Rankin (Bolton, St. Peter & St. Paul RC Church). This may be him - TBC.  Lawrence Mather also married Jane Ward there the same day. They may be brothers as in 1846, Lawrence had a daughter named Agnes Mather (who died 1847).
Agnes Rankin Possibly Agnes Mather (1828-1891) who died is Blackburn Southern, aged 63, although this is more likely another Agnes from Scotland. 1822 - 1858 Lawrence Mather 36 36 In 1841, Lawrence Mather (15) was working at the factory and living at Mary Lane, Wigan (by Brown Street).

14 Sep 1844, Lawrence Mather married Jane Ward at St Peter & St Paul Roman Catholic Church, Bolton

1846-48, Agnes and Samuel's births were registered in Western Bolton.

In 1851, Lawrence Mather and Jane (30 & 28) were at 10 Back Kay Street, Little Bolton with son Samuel (2) and three THORNLEY sister-in-laws from Belkmont.

In 1856 & 1858 Elizabeth and Janes births were registered in Eastern Bolton.

Lawrence died in 1858 (Eastern Bolton).  In 1861 his widow Jane Mather (39) was with son Samuel (13).
1823 Jane Ward Jane WARD when married to Lawrence, but had three younger THORNLEY sisters (all born Belmont) with her in 1851, and later named her father Joseph LEE.

In 1838, Jane Ward, aged 17 was imprisoned for 6 months for "larcany by servant" (possibly another slighty older woman)

14 Sep 1844, Lawrence Mather married Jane Ward at St Peter & St Paul Roman Catholic Church, Bolton.

1851 and 1861 census records show Jane was born in Belmont.  She may be the daughter of Andrew Ward and Boarinias Oddie from Belmont (unconfirmed).

In 1861 Jane Mather (39) was with her surviving son Samuel (13) at 9 Waterside, Western Bolton.

8 Oct 1865, Jane Mather of 11 Water Side, widower, daughter of James Lee married Henry Smith of Howell Croft, a Herbalist at St. Peter's Bolton.

In 1871, Jane Smith, (49 born Belmont) and Henry (62, a herbalist) were at Howell Croft, Bolton (with no children).

In 1881, Jane Smith, 56, Widow (born Sharples), was a herbalist at 17 Howell Croft North, living alone.
1848 Samuel Mather in 1848, Samuel was born in Little Bolton.  He is the only child of Lawrence and Jane to survive infancy.

In 1851, Samuel, born Bolton and birth registered in Little Bolton,  was aged 2 with both parents at 10 Back Kay Street, Little Bolton.

In 1861, Samuel was 13 with his mother Jane (39) at 9 Waterside, Bolton. Both were factory operatives.

Samuel's mother Jane remarried in 1865, and by 1871, Samuel was not with her.

In 1861, John and Mary (20 & 17) were with their father and step-mother James and Mary Mather (52 & 38) at 59 Derby Street, Bolton.  Thomas and Martha were missing.

In April 1851, William and Jane (21 & 18) were at Holcombe, Tottington Lower End.

7 June 1886 Nancy Southern, widow married James Wilson.  Her father was William Mather, and Overlooker

In Q4 1869 Nancy Mather married John Southern (Bolton RO, RO/39/133).

In 1871, John and Nancy (24 & 18) were at 26 Cusent Court, Farnworth.

In 1881 Nancy Southern (28) was at 24 Brown Street, Little Bolton with daughter Mary (6) and two lodgers.

7 June 1886 Nancy Southern, widow married James Wilson a labourer.  Her father was William Mather, and Overlooker.

2 Jan 1899, Nancy Wilson (45), daughter of William Mather an Overlooker married Israel Howarth (48), both of Peel at Peel Chapel, Little Hulton.
1856 Mary Mather There are two Catholic Mary Mathers, daughters of William Mather of Bolton, one born 1856 daughter of Jane (this Mary) and the other born 1859, daughter of Ann who marriaed Isaac Smith. 1862 James Mather ~1825 Richard Mather The only marriage for MATHER+HEYES is 1848 at St Helens.

26 March 1848, Richard Mather, a Collier from Rainford, son of John Adamson married Mary Hayer from St Helens, daughter of Isaac Heyes.

William's wife Mary died in 1864, aged 37 and their only surviving child Alice Ann Mather was brought up by her grandmother.  William may have remarried (TBD).

In 1881, Alice Ann Mather, aged 8, born Billinge, was liging with her grandmother Ann Farrar (head, 68) at 17 Club Street, Windle, Lancashire.
1837 William Mather In 1851, William Mather (14) was at Canal Yard, Regent Street, Salford with his mother Sarah (49) from Liverpool.

25 Sep 1858, Gulielmum (i.e. William) Mather of Newport Street son of Richard Mather married Margaritam (i.e. Margaret) Dowd of Bk Newport Street, daughter of Edward Dowd at St Peter & St Paul Roman Catholic Church, Bolton.

In 1861, William (a Cotton Shoker?) and Margaret were in East Bolton with Mary J (1). Margaret's older sister Sarah (Wid, 57, b.Liverpool) was house keeper.

In 1871, William and Margaret (33 & 30) were at 3 Back Soho Street, East Bolton with Sarah (9), Edward (8) and William (2). They had a lodger and his cousin Mary Jackson (19, mother DOWD).

In 1881, William and Margaret (both 43) were at 5 Back Soho Street, East Bolton with Sarah (19), William (11) and Sophia (9).

Children indexed as DOUD on Lanc-BMD and Mary Jane and Margaret as BOND on GRO.  Was she using two names?  There was also Thomas born 1855 (MMN=BOND) before they were married, so Margaret may be a widow when she married William.
