Jeremiah's father was Jeremiah (Jeremy) Mather and his mother was Alice Lord. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Betty Lord. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Samuel, James, John, Robert, Peter, James, Betty and Mary. He was the fifth oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 16 in June 1856 in Bolton. His burial was on June 4th, 1856 at St. Mary (Radcliffe).²³
