Robert's father was Jeremiah (Jeremy) Mather and his mother was Alice Lord. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Betty Lord. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Samuel, James, Jeremiah, John, Peter, James, Betty and Mary. He was the seventh oldest of the nine children.

General Notes
- In 1881, Robert J (aged 18 so born 1863) was a farm labourer. His is listed as son under John implying John's son. However John married in 1872 and didnt have a son Robert. He may instrad be Jeremy's son, aged 28.
