Peter Mather

Peter was born in July 1848 in Radcliffe.¹

Peter's father was Jeremiah (Jeremy) Mather and his mother was Alice Lord. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Betty Lord. He had six brothers and two sisters, named Samuel, James, Jeremiah, John, Robert, James, Betty and Mary. He was the eighth oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 55 on August 19th, 1903 in Bolton. His burial was in August 1903.²²

  In 1871, Peter (22, Engine Tenter) from Breightmet was married to Alice (21, born Harwood). They were living at Ashes, Harwood.
  
  In 1873, Alice died, aged 23 and in 1875, Peter married Martha Booth at St. James, Breightmet.
  
  In 1881, Peter Mather (32) was a foreman at the Bleach Works. With him were his new wife Martha (32) and daughter Alice Emily aged 7 (from his first wife Alice). He also has an unmarried "lodger" Susannah Rothwell (27) with two young daughters Alice and Lydia (3 & 1), possibly his.
  
  In 1891, Peter and Martha (both 42) and Alice E (17) were at 11 Chapel Street, Tonge. Three Booths inc Rachel (Wid, 65) were lodgers, probably Martha's mother.
  
  In 1901, Peter Mather (52) was a night watchman with wife Alice (also 52). Daughter Alice Emily Bromiley and family were living with them.
  
  "PETER, husband of Martha MATHER, departed this life August 19th 1903, aged 56 years" (but actually 55).

- From 1881 Peter's occupation was Foreman for Bleach Works, in Tonge-with-Haulgh.
  
  From 1901 his occupation was Night Watchman in Tonge-with-Haulgh.
