Betty was born on October 1st, 1829 in Prestwich and her baptism took place there on January 3rd, 1830.1 2  Betty's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Sarah Ashworth.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Betty Walker. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Samuel, John, Thomas, William, Mary and Alice. She had an adopted sister named Sarah.
