John was born in 1837 in Prestwich and his baptism took place on June 18th, 1837 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1 2  John's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Sarah Ashworth.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Betty Walker. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Samuel, Thomas, William, Betty, Mary and Alice. He had an adopted sister named Sarah.
