Samuel was born on December 24th, 1834 in Prestwich and his baptism took place on April 26th, 1835 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1 2  Samuel's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Sarah Ashworth.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Betty Walker. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, Thomas, William, Betty, Mary and Alice. He had an adopted sister named Sarah.
