Thomas was born in 1841 in Prestwich.1  Thomas' father was Richard Mather and his mother was Sarah Ashworth.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Betty Walker. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Samuel, John, William, Betty, Mary and Alice. He had an adopted sister named Sarah.
