Mary was born on July 5th, 1832 in Prestwich and her baptism took place there on September 9th, 1832.1  Mary's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Sarah Ashworth.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Betty Walker. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Samuel, John, Thomas, William, Betty and Alice. She had an adopted sister named Sarah.
