Emma was born in December 1871 in Bury.1  Emma's father was William Eckersley and her mother was Elizabeth Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were William Mather and Mary Davenport. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, William, Harriet and Elizabeth.  She was the oldest of the six children.
