Harriet was born in December 1873 in Bury.1  Harriet's father was William Eckersley and her mother was Elizabeth Mather.  Her maternal grandparents were William Mather and Mary Davenport. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, William, Emma and Elizabeth.  She was the second oldest of the six children.
