William was born in 1824 in Pilkington and his baptism took place on May 2nd, 1824 at St. Mary (Radcliffe).1 2  William's father was James Mather and his mother was Mary Whitehead.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and <Unknown>. He had three sisters named Bridget, Phebe and Dinah.  He was the second oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 55 in October 1879 in Manchester.  His burial was on October 3rd, 1879 at St. Thomas (Radcliffe).3
