Thomas was born in September 1875 in Bury.1  Thomas' father was William Eckersley and his mother was Elizabeth Mather.  His maternal grandparents were William Mather and Mary Davenport. He had two brothers and three sisters, named John, William, Emma, Harriet and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
