Margaret was born in 1817 in Droylsden and her baptism took place on June 8th, 1817 at All Saints (Manchester).1  Margaret's father was William Mather and her mother was Jane Biggarstaff. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Abraham, John, William, Thomas, James, Anne, Alice, Sarah and Betty.  She was the oldest of the ten children.
