Elizabeth, known as Betty, was born in 1831 in Droylsden.1  Betty's father was William Mather and her mother was Jane Biggarstaff. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Abraham, John, William, Thomas, James, Margaret, Anne, Alice and Sarah.  She was the third youngest of the ten children.
