William was born in 1828 in Droylsden and his baptism took place on April 27th, 1828 in Manchester.1  William's father was William Mather and his mother was Jane Biggarstaff. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Abraham, John, Thomas, James, Margaret, Anne, Alice, Sarah and Betty.  He was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
