Alice was born in 1825 in Droylsden.1  Alice's father was William Mather and her mother was Jane Biggarstaff. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Abraham, John, William, Thomas, James, Margaret, Anne, Sarah and Betty.  She was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
