Thomas was born in 1832 in Droylsden.1  Thomas' father was William Mather and his mother was Jane Biggarstaff. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Abraham, John, William, James, Margaret, Anne, Alice, Sarah and Betty.  He was the second youngest of the ten children.
