Sarah's father was James Mather and her mother was Fanny Nuttall.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Betty Walker. She had two brothers and five sisters, named George, Samuel, Fanny, Elizabeth, Esther, Alice and Mary.  She was the third youngest of the eight children.
