Mary was born in June 1853 in Prestwich.1  Mary's father was James Mather and her mother was Fanny Nuttall.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Betty Walker. She had two brothers and five sisters, named George, Samuel, Fanny, Elizabeth, Esther, Alice and Sarah.  She was the youngest of the eight children.
