Samuel was born in March 1850 in Prestwich.1  Samuel's father was James Mather and his mother was Fanny Nuttall.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Betty Walker. He had a brother and six sisters, named George, Fanny, Elizabeth, Esther, Alice, Sarah and Mary.  He was the seventh oldest of the eight children.
