James was born on March 6th, 1839 in Radcliffe and his baptism took place on March 10th, 1849.1  James' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Mary Taylor.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Melling. He had a brother and six sisters, named Thomas, Alice, Sarah, Eliza, Martha, Hannah and Elizabeth.  He was the youngest of the eight children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named James and Mary.  He died at 4 months old in July 1839 in Radcliffe.  His burial was on July 17th, 1839 at St. Mary (Radcliffe).2 3
