Eliza's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Mary Taylor.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Melling. She had two brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, James, Alice, Sarah, Martha, Hannah and Elizabeth.  She was the third oldest of the eight children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named James and Mary.
