James' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Lydia Greenhalgh.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Melling. He had a sister named Mary.  He was the younger of the two children. He had two half-brothers and six half-sisters, named Thomas, James, Alice, Sarah, Eliza, Martha, Hannah and Elizabeth.  He died at 11 months old in May 1825 in Radcliffe.  He was buried on May 18th, 1825 at Christ Church, Ainsworth.²
