Joseph was born in December 1846 in Radcliffe.1  Joseph's father was Joseph Davenport and his mother was Mary Ann Mather. He had three brothers named James, George and Samuel.  He was the youngest of the four children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named William, Margaret, Martha and Alice.
