George's father was Joseph Davenport and his mother was Mary Ann Mather. He had three brothers named James, Samuel and Joseph. He was the second oldest of the four children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named William, Margaret, Martha and Alice.

- George was the son of Joseph Devenport, but before he married Mary Ann, so birth registered as Mather.
