John was born in 1598 in Tyldesley and his baptism took place on October 8th, 1598 in Leigh.1  John's father was Hugh Mather and his mother was <unknown>. He had four brothers and two sisters, named James, Hugh, Thomas, Adam, Richard and Anne.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
