Miles was born on November 4th, 1801 in Radcliffe and his baptism took place on December 6th, 1801 at St. Mary (Radcliffe).¹

Miles' father was James Mather and his mother was Mary Melling. His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Pendlebury.
