John was born in 1761 in Radcliffe.¹ John's father was James Mather and his mother was Mary Pendlebury. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Miles, Thomas, James, Ann, Betty, Martha, Alice, Jenny and Sally. He was the sixth oldest of the ten children. He died at the age of 68 on December 5th, 1829 in Radcliffe. His burial was on December 7th, 1829 at St. Mary (Radcliffe).²³
