Mary was born in 1852 in Worsley.¹

Mary's father was John Mather and her mother was Martha Adcroft. Her paternal grandparents were Ellis Mather and Elizabeth Cook. She had a brother and two sisters, named Ellis, Elizabeth and Alice. She was the oldest of the four children.
