Samuel was born in January 1861 in Whitefield.1  Samuel's father was William Mather and his mother was Mary Davenport.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Whitehead. He had four brothers and six sisters, named Clement, James, George, Richard, Mary, Emma, Elizabeth, Harriet, Hannah and Levinia.  He was the fourth youngest of the eleven children.
