Emma was born in January 1848 in Whitefield.1  Emma's father was William Mather and her mother was Mary Davenport.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Whitehead. She had five brothers and five sisters, named Clement, James, Samuel, George, Richard, Mary, Elizabeth, Harriet, Hannah and Levinia.  She was the second oldest of the eleven children.
